Are You Taking Yourself Out for Coffee?

Hello valuable mamas!

Let me share a little secret—a survival trick I recently added to my mommy life. Ready? Solo coffee breaks. Yes, just me, myself, and my cappuccino.

Ever since I became a mom, I’ve been glued to my daily plan like it’s the Holy Grail. Call me a control freak—I’ll own it. Because honestly, when things go off track (and you know how often that happens), it feels like climbing Everest to get back on schedule. My days are packed: full-time job, cooking, laundry, decluttering at least one corner of the house, kindergarten drop-offs, after-school activities, homework checks, self-care, and squeezing in my workout. Sometimes I feel like a robot running on autopilot.

But here’s the thing—I keep reminding myself this phase won’t last forever. Kids grow up fast (whether we like it or not), and one day they’ll be independent… maybe even help with chores. A mom can dream, right? For now, though, the load is mostly on me. (Hello gender equality—different conversation for another day.)

So, a few months ago, I started something that changed my week: I take myself out for coffee. Sounds simple? It wasn’t for me. In my pre-mom life, coffee outings were a social event—planned, scheduled, and always with company. Never solo. But now? I sneak in a precious hour whenever I can—while my daughter is at dance class, after a doctor’s appointment, or even early on weekends when I casually announce, “I’m off to get groceries.” And yes, I do… just not immediately. (Shhh, that stays between us.)

Here’s what happens: I find a cozy café, order a dreamy cappuccino and maybe the local specialty, scroll my phone in peace, or read a few pages of my book. That’s it. Simple, quick, doesn’t disrupt family life—and oh, the magic it works! I walk out feeling light-hearted, recharged, and ready to tackle the chaos with a smile. The whole house runs smoother because happy mom, happy family, right?

Bonus? I’ve discovered adorable little spots I’d never visit otherwise. My husband is a creature of habit—same places, same menu—so solo adventures let me explore. Take this gem in Old Montreal (see pics): a fairytale café I stumbled upon after a workday. I treated myself to a salmon bagel and a refreshing coffee, and for one blissful hour, it felt like stepping into a magical world just for me.

The best part? I came home smiling, patient, and genuinely happy. Everyone benefited. So, mama, here’s my challenge for you: take yourself out for coffee. No guilt, no overthinking. Just you, a warm cup, and a little slice of peace. You deserve it. Mamavalues, right?

Love, Katerina
