Beef Bourguignon: A Cozy Valentine’s Hug in a Pot (and Mama’s Secret Sunday Off)

Hello lovely mamas!
As a woman who loves to honor her own advice (and occasionally treats her future self like the queen she is), I decided to follow through with my suggestion from my previous post: preparing a French-style Valentine’s Day at home.
So, on February 14th, while the world rushed to book overpriced restaurants and inhale chocolate at questionable hours, I was stirring a pot of simmering, aromatic beef bourguignon.
The result?A heart‑warming, cozy, soul-soothing family dinner that tasted like a warm hug delivered by someone wearing a beret.
Bonus plot twist: The quantity was so generous that mama didn’t have to cook on Sunday either. And honestly? That alone deserves a standing ovation. Because even on Valentine’s Day, Mama deserves a little love too — preferably in the form of leftovers.
If you feel like bringing a touch of rustic French coziness into your kitchen while winter still insists on overstaying its welcome, this recipe is for you!

Cozy, Aromatic Beef Bourguignon (Mama-Style)
A classic French stew, elevated by slow cooking, deep flavors, and that unmistakable red wine magic. Perfect for cold evenings, family dinners, or any night when you want to impress without fuss!
Ingredients
1.5 kg beef, cut in pieces (go for tender parts like leg or chuck)
1 large onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tbsp tomato paste
400 g tomato passata
2 carrots, cut into cubes
500 g mushrooms, cut into large pieces
200–300 g bacon (optional, but oh-so-worth it)
500 ml chicken stock
100–200 ml red wine
3 tbsp flour
Olive oil and butter
Salt & pepper, to taste
How to Make It (the Cozy Way)
Brown the Beef: Heat olive oil and a little butter in a deep pot.Pat the beef dry (don’t skip this!) and brown it in batches so it caramelizes beautifully.Remove and set aside.
The Flavor Base: In the same pot, add the bacon (if using) and cook until lightly crisp.Add the onion and garlic; sauté until fragrant and golden.
Build the Sauce: Stir in the tomato paste and flour.Mix well — this is what thickens that gorgeous sauce.Deglaze with the red wine, scraping all those delicious brown bits stuck at the bottom.
Slow & Steady Wins the Race: Add back the beef, carrots, mushrooms, and tomato passata.Pour in the chicken stock, season with salt and pepper, and stir.
Let the Magic Happen: Cover, reduce heat, and let it simmer slowly for 1.5 to 2.5 hours, until the beef is melt‑in‑your‑mouth tender.(This is your cue to relax. Or hide in the bathroom with a book. No judgment.)
Serve WarmWith mashed potatoes, rice, or even crusty bread.Preferably in good company. But it tastes divine even when enjoyed in peaceful solitude while the kids are finally asleep.
