How to Undecorate Like a Pro (and Actually Enjoy It!)

Hey there mamas!

The festive season is officially behind us. The lights have twinkled, the stockings have hung, and the magic of Christmas has filled every corner of our homes. But now comes the inevitable chore: taking it all down. For many, undecorating feels like a gloomy task - a stark reminder that the holidays are over and that we’re stepping into the long, cold stretch of winter without the sparkle of big celebrations to break the monotony.

If you’ve ever felt that pang of sadness while packing away ornaments, you’re not alone. I used to dread this process too. For years, I kept decorations up until January 10th, following the tradition in my home country. But something happened in 2021 that completely changed my perspective—and turned undecorating into a ritual I now look forward to.

The Moment That Changed Everything

On Christmas 2021, my youngest was just a few months old when he had to be hospitalized for a few days. Naturally, I stayed with him, while my husband held down the fort with our two older kids. Thankfully, we were discharged on January 1st. I remember walking into our home that morning - sleep-deprived, exhausted, but overwhelmingly grateful. I made myself a coffee and sat quietly, looking around at the garlands, angels and glitter that had filled our home for weeks.

And then it hit me: I needed a fresh start. I wanted to clear the space, breathe, and welcome the new year with a clean slate. So, despite my fatigue, I started undecorating that very day. And you know what? It felt amazing. Like lifting a weight off my chest. Since then, I’ve embraced this mindset: undecorating isn’t the end of magic - it’s the beginning of renewal.

Why I Decorate Early (and Undecorate Sooner)

I’m a big fan of Christmas décor. Honestly, I tell myself I do it for the kids, but the truth? I do it for me. There’s something about a home dressed in lights and garlands that lifts my spirit. That’s why I start early - around November 10th - so I can soak in the cozy vibes for a good six weeks. But once December 25th passes, the stockings and nutcrackers start to feel out of place. And because of that New Year’s Eve spent in the hospital, I now crave a clean, fresh home before the year begins. So, I usually undecorate between December 26th and 30th. Definitely before January hits.

My Step-by-Step Method to Make Undecorating Pleasant

Here’s how I turned a dreaded chore into a soothing ritual:

  1. Set the Mood

Pop in your earbuds, play music that nourishes your soul, and make it fun. A good playlist changes everything.

  2. Start with the Tree

    • Remove ornaments carefully and store them in labeled boxes.

    • Wrap fragile pieces in bubble wrap for extra protection.

    • Roll lights neatly so next year’s you will thank you.

Anything broken? Toss it immediately - don’t carry clutter into the new year.

  3. Tree Storage Upgrade

I used to hate the bulky cardboard box. Then I found a sleek storage bag online - pretty and practical. It makes the whole process feel less messy.

  4. Gather Everything Else

Take down garlands, figurines and all the festive bits from around the house. Place them on the kitchen island or dining table so you can see everything at once. Then organize them into big, transparent bins. Avoid overpacking - future you will appreciate the neatness.

  5. Wash and Store Seasonal Items

Kitchen towels, bathroom linens, plates, and serving platters with Christmas designs? Wash, dry and store them properly. Same goes for kids’ holiday crafts - keep them safe for memory boxes.

  6. Final Touches

Deep clean the space, light a scented candle, and (optional but highly recommended) pour yourself a glass of wine. You’ve earned it.

A Little Tip for Winter Warmth

Undecorating doesn’t mean stripping your home bare. Keep a few winter-friendly pieces - like a greenery garland or neutral candles - to maintain a cozy vibe. This year, I kept a holly garland wrapped around a wooden basket near the fireplace. It adds a pop of color without screaming “Christmas.” I also kept the holiday cards we received from family in Greece - they make me smile every time I see them.

And here’s the secret to beating the post-holiday blues: start planning your winter décor. Think soft throws, warm lighting and maybe a touch of greenery. Because the sadness of undecorating? It can be cured with the joy of decorating again!

Undecorating isn’t the end of magic - it’s the start of a fresh, calm chapter. Embrace it, make it intentional and let your home breathe. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

Love, Katerina
