Montreal’s Arctic Chill? Warm Up with This Cozy Salmon Soup!

Hey there mamas!

So, how’s the weather where you are? Because here in Montreal, let me tell you—it’s brutal. The cold hit us like an uninvited guest who showed up early and refuses to leave. We’re talking about a freezing wave so intense it feels like winter skipped the polite “hello” and went straight to “surprise, I’m moving in!”

When the thermometer starts flirting with negative numbers, my brain immediately switches to survival mode: warm socks, fuzzy blankets, and—most importantly—soup therapy. Because nothing says “I’ve got this” like a steaming bowl of comfort that hugs you from the inside.

Yesterday, in a moment of culinary improvisation (read: I refused to go grocery shopping in Arctic conditions), I threw together a salmon soup with whatever was lurking in my fridge. And guess what? It turned out so good, even my picky eater gave me the chef’s kiss. So, grab your ladles, because I’m about to share this cozy masterpiece with you!

Salmon Soup à la “Whatever’s in the Kitchen”

Ingredients:

  • 500–600 g salmon fillet, cut into cubes

  • 1 big red onion (or two small ones, because size is relative)

  • 4–5 potatoes, cubed

  • ½ butternut squash, cubed

  • 1 stick of celery, chopped

  • A handful of dill or parsley

  • 50 g butter

  • 100 ml cooking cream

  • 1 veggie or fish bouillon cube

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • 1–1.2 liters water

Preparation (aka: How to Make Magic in a Pot)

  1. In a deep pot, melt the butter and sauté the onion, celery, potatoes, and squash until they look glossy and smell like heaven.

  2. Add water, bouillon cube, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.

  3. When the veggies are soft, grab your immersion blender and turn that pot into a velvety dream.

  4. Toss in the salmon cubes and let them cook gently for 8–10 minutes.

  5. Finish with cooking cream and a sprinkle of dill or parsley. Turn off the heat and let the soup sit for a few minutes to thicken and become even more irresistible.

Serving tip: Drizzle with a little virgin olive oil or squeeze some lemon for that extra zing. Or just dive in as is—it’s already fabulous!

This soup isn’t just healthy—it’s basically a warm hug in a bowl. Perfect for those days when the cold makes you question all your life choices, like why you didn’t move to the Bahamas when you had the chance.

So, Montreal friends (and everyone else freezing), give this recipe a try. Your family will thank you, your soul will thank you, and honestly, your taste buds might throw a party.

Stay warm, stay sassy, and remember: Soup is self-care!

Love, Katerina
