My Montreal Part II: Spend an Inspirational Morning with Me in Montreal's Golden Square Mile

Hey there friends!

Last Friday, I had the morning off.

One of those rare and precious days when everyone else is busy with work, school, and pre-school, while I am unexpectedly gifted a few hours entirely to myself.

I was determined to make the most of them.

I could finally finish my seasonal wardrobe project, which inevitably turns into a week-long operation involving sorting, storing, washing, decluttering, organizing, and wondering why children seem to outgrow perfectly good clothes every three months.

Or perhaps I could prepare meals for the entire week ahead and save myself precious time and energy.

Or maybe I could wrap myself in a blanket and spend the morning on the couch, alternating between episodes of The Middle and much-needed naps.

Thankfully, I came up with a much better idea.

I decided to spend the morning wandering around Montreal like a tourist, ready to discover new corners of the city.

The weather seemed eager to support my plan. It was one of those glorious September mornings when summer gently lingers before surrendering to autumn. The sky was a brilliant blue, the air pleasantly mild, and the sunshine convinced me to wear a red dress.

Yes, red!

A bright color for a bright mood.

I even applied full makeup, purely for myself. As a work-from-home mother juggling a million responsibilities, I rarely take the time anymore.

Looking at myself in the mirror, I briefly caught a glimpse of an older version of me. Not older in age, but older in spirit. The carefree young woman who existed before life transformed me into a full-time mother, housekeeper, cook, chauffeur, secretary, accountant, and occasional referee.

And before I continue, let me share a pro-mama tip:

Never tell anybody you're off work.

People instantly remember every task they have postponed since the creation of the world and somehow conclude that you're now available to handle all of them.

Coffee First, Always

Living in the suburbs, I drove to a metro station and headed downtown.

In my opinion, this is by far the best way to explore Montreal.

No parking headaches.

No construction detours.

No worrying about how far you've wandered from your car.

I exited at Peel Station and headed toward Sherbrooke Street.

Like any proper adventure, mine began with coffee.

After some research, I had chosen Café Amea, a lovely and refined café tucked inside a beautiful atrium.

The reviews had promised charm.

They did not exaggerate.

Pastries filled with pistachio cream and praline tempted me from every direction, but my red dress had inspired unusually healthy intentions. I ordered whole-grain sourdough topped with smoked salmon and avocado, accompanied by a perfectly crafted cappuccino.

With breakfast in front of me, I read a few pages of my book, reviewed my plans for the week ahead, and simply enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.

It was the perfect beginning!

Discovering Montreal's Golden Square Mile

Rejuvenated by caffeine and inspiration, I stepped back outside and began exploring the Golden Square Mile.

For those unfamiliar with the area, the Golden Square Mile was once the most prestigious residential neighborhood in Canada. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Montreal's wealthiest industrialists built magnificent mansions here, creating a district whose residents controlled much of Canada's wealth.

Today, many of those grand residences remain, giving the area an elegance unlike any other part of the city.

It is no coincidence that two of Montreal's most iconic luxury hotels, the Ritz-Carlton and the Four Seasons, stand here.

Walking along Sherbrooke Street feels like strolling through an open-air architecture museum.

Every building seems to tell a story.

Historic churches rise above the streets, elegant stone facades command attention, and beautiful details reveal themselves whenever you take the time to look up.

Art, Culture, and Color

Soon I reached the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts district.

The area combines culture and beauty effortlessly.

Colorful flowers bordered the sidewalks while contemporary sculptures invited passersby to slow down and engage with their surroundings.

I spent quite some time wandering through the installations, admiring how art had become part of everyday city life rather than being hidden away behind museum walls.

A Walk Through McGill University

Continuing west along Sherbrooke Street, I eventually arrived at McGill University.

And what a delightful surprise it was.

The campus was open and vibrant, welcoming visitors into its historic grounds.

There is something uniquely uplifting about university campuses.

Perhaps it is the energy.

Perhaps it is the dreams.

Or perhaps it is the reminder that the future remains full of possibilities.

Students hurried between classes. Newcomers explored their surroundings. Professors moved between buildings. Parents pushed strollers through the pathways. Groups gathered on the lawns, enjoying the beautiful weather.

The campus felt alive.

Walking there transported me back to my own university years at the Law School of Athens.

I couldn't help imagining my own children one day experiencing campus life, filled with excitement and ambitious plans for the future.

McGill's historic stone buildings resemble small castles more than classrooms. Libraries, museums, and academic halls create an atmosphere that is both grand and welcoming.

Unexpectedly, this became my favorite part of the day.

Beauty and an Unexpected Realization

After exploring McGill, I returned toward the heart of the Golden Square Mile.

Passing luxury boutiques, elegant spas, and prestigious hotels, I eventually found myself on Sainte-Catherine Street.

A quick stop at Sephora provided a generous spray of vanilla perfume, because while academic inspiration is wonderful, smelling delightful never hurts.

Next, I wandered into Holt Renfrew.

Not because I intended to shop.

Far from it.

If given the choice, I will almost always spend money on family travel rather than luxury goods.

But I enjoy beautiful spaces.

And as I wandered among carefully designed displays and elegant interiors, I experienced an unexpected realization.

Beauty matters deeply to me.

Not luxury.

Not status.

Beauty.

Beautiful places.

Beautiful relationships.

Beautiful moments.

A beautiful home.

Beauty discovered in ordinary, everyday life.

And perhaps that is the true purpose of Mamavalues.

To remind fellow mothers that beauty exists even in the middle of busy schedules, endless responsibilities, and exhausting routines.

Because when we notice beauty, gratitude follows.

And when we become more grateful, we become happier.

More present.

More aware.

And if we are truly present, time doesn't fly away quite so quickly.

Instead, we experience it fully.

We create memories that matter.

And suddenly, ordinary moments become extraordinary.

Lunch, Chocolate and One Last Surprise

My wanderings eventually brought me to Mandy's, a charming restaurant known for its fresh salads and beautiful atmosphere.

I wasn't even particularly hungry.

The place was simply too inviting to resist.

I ordered a salad topped with spicy tuna and enjoyed every bite while soaking in the elegant yet relaxed ambiance.

Finally, content with my day, I made my way back toward Peel Station.

But Montreal wasn't done surprising me.

Near the metro, I spotted a small chocolate shop displaying a sign that boldly claimed:

"The Best Chocolate in Montreal."

How was I supposed to resist that?

A few minutes later, I emerged carrying two small treasures:

One milk chocolate filled with pistachio praline.

One white chocolate with salted caramel.

Remember the beauty we talked about earlier?

There it was!

Waiting patiently inside two colorful little boxes.

Heading Home

As I left Montreal behind and drove back toward home, I felt something I had not expected that morning.

Renewed.

Inspired.

Refreshed.

Ready to return to my everyday roles.

Mother.

Cook.

Housekeeper.

Driver.

Planner.

All of them.

Not because I had escaped my life for a few hours.

But because I had been reminded of something important.

Beauty matters.

And sometimes, all it takes is one morning, one coffee, one stroll through a beautiful city, to help us see it again!
