The Official Family Vacation Packing List (From a Mom Who Takes Lists Very Seriously)

Hey there mamas!
I have finally done it.
I avoided writing this post last year because, quite frankly, the task felt far too overwhelming even for me, and that's saying something considering I belong to the proud category of people who find lists not only useful but genuinely comforting.
Some people meditate. Some people journal.
I make lists.
And before you judge me, let me tell you that a good vacation packing list can be the difference between a relaxing family trip and buying emergency underwear at an overpriced airport shop.
So today, dear Mama, I present to you my Official Family Vacation Packing List.
Feel free to use it, adapt it, save it, print it, laminate it, or simply admire it from a distance, ha!
Why I Always Start With A List
Before every single trip, I create a brand-new vacation list.
A road trip doesn't require the same strategy as a flight. A beach vacation is different from a city escape. A couple's getaway has very different needs than a family adventure involving children, snacks, and approximately 437 "essential" stuffed animals.
The list itself is actually the most important part of my preparation process.
Once everything is written down, I no longer have to carry it in my head.
I don't have to wonder whether I remembered the passports. I don't have to wake up at 2 a.m. wondering if someone packed sunscreen. The responsibility has officially been transferred from my brain to a piece of paper.
To make sure nothing slips through the cracks, I divide my list into categories. Some people have suggested this might be slightly obsessive.
I prefer the term efficiently organized.

1. Travel Documents
This category comes first because without it, the vacation may end before it even begins.
Make sure you have:
Passports
Driver's licenses
International driver's permit if required
Travel insurance documents
Hotel confirmations
Airline tickets
Activity reservations
Call me old-fashioned, but I still print everything.
Technology is wonderful until your phone battery dies, your internet disappears, or an airport employee asks for a confirmation number at the exact moment your app decides to crash.
I also keep a short list of places I want to visit, restaurants I want to try, beaches worth discovering and activities that caught my attention during my research.
2. Wallets, Money And Valuables
Before every trip, I take a few minutes to organize my wallet.
Credit cards?
Check.
Some local currency?
Check.
Emergency cash?
Check.
I also gather any jewelry I plan to bring and place it in a small pouch.
Years of travel have taught me one thing: The less jewelry you bring, the happier you'll be.
Vacation is supposed to simplify life, not create opportunities for losing your favorite earrings.
3. The Travel Bag
Everything important goes into the backpack or tote bag that stays with me throughout the journey.
This includes:
Documents
Wallet
Electronics
Keys
Agenda or notebook
And please, for the love of future-you, pack your house keys in the travel bag before leaving.
Because after a 10-hour flight, three tired children, several suitcases and a brain that is still operating in vacation mode, the last thing you want is standing outside your front door wondering where those keys disappeared.
4. Electronics
This category somehow multiplies every year.
Phones.
Tablets.
Chargers.
Power banks.
Headphones.
Adapters.
Cables.
More cables.
And somehow still not the right cable.
I now go device by device and verify that every electronic item has its matching charger before we leave.
It saves a lot of frustration later.
5. Books
Every year I carefully select books for myself and the children.
Every year I imagine long peaceful reading sessions by the beach.
Every year most of those books come back home untouched.
Yet somehow I continue packing them.
Because hope is important.
6. Clothing
This is where things get serious.
First, I separate the clothes everyone will wear on travel day.
Then I sort everything else by category:
T-shirts
Tops
Shorts
Pants
Dresses
Skirts
Pajamas
Underwear
Socks
Doing this by category instead of randomly throwing things into a suitcase helps me see what we actually need instead of packing for every possible weather scenario known to humanity.
One additional tip:
If you're flying, always remember that airports and airplanes seem to operate at permanent winter temperatures. Bring a light sweater, even if your destination resembles paradise.
7. Shoes
This is where I become ruthless.
Shoes occupy half the suitcase and somehow only one pair gets worn.
My rule is simple:
One pair worn during travel
One additional pair
Flip-flops or sandals
Done.
Anything more usually ends up taking a vacation of its own inside the suitcase.
8. Beach Gear
If you're heading somewhere sunny, this deserves its own category.
Swimsuits.
Beach toys.
Snorkeling equipment.
Beach towels if needed.
Sun hats.
Anything that contributes to creating those wonderful summer memories.
9. Toiletries And Cosmetics
This section deserves a deep breath before beginning.
Shampoo.
Conditioner.
Body wash.
Face cream.
Makeup.
Toothbrushes.
Toothpaste.
Brushes.
Hair accessories.
Deodorant.
Perfume.
Cotton sticks and pads.
And every other item that somehow becomes absolutely essential five minutes before departure.
Above all, never forget sunscreen.
For the face.
For the body.
And if you're ambitious, even for the hair.
10. Family Pharmacy
This is the category I hope never gets used.
But I'm always grateful when it's there.
My travel pharmacy includes:
Thermometer
Fever medication
Pain medication
Antihistamines
Bandages
Antiseptic cream
Personal medications
Insect repellent
Bite relief gel
After-sun lotion
Nothing ruins a vacation faster than discovering you need something urgently and spending half a day searching for a pharmacy in an unfamiliar place.
The Best Part Of The List
Once everything is written down, packing becomes surprisingly easy.
No more mental load.
No more trying to remember seventeen things simultaneously.
No more wondering what you've forgotten.
Just pick the items, check them off, and enjoy the excitement of knowing that a new adventure is just around the corner.
And if making lists for vacation genuinely excites you, dear Mama, please know that you are among friends here.
Because those beautiful, carefully organized lists are often the invisible work behind unforgettable family memories!
Happy travels! ✈️🌴💕
Love, Katerina
