7 Places You Forget to Clean — But Will Make Your Home Feel Instantly Refreshed

Hello fellow mamas!

Are you dived deep until your throat in the famous spring cleaning these days like myself? Technically it is spring, although here in Quebec the temperature is stubbornly stuck around 0°C and snow still visits us from time to time… But since March 21st we have officially welcomed the new season, and that inevitably leads to one annual chore we all know too well: spring cleaning.

Now, what’s the big deal with spring cleaning compared to our regular, “just-trying-to-survive-here” cleaning? Well, it comes with this underlying urge for rejuvenation — of our spirit, our goals, our mood, our body, our mind and… yes, our environment. And let’s be honest, our environment influences all of the above in a major way.

Spring cleaning is deep. It’s intentional. It asks us to touch the parts of our homes we don’t dare look at during our weekly cleanings. It’s a reset not only for the house but for us. And here’s the thing: it is not a one‑day mission. At least not in my case — full‑time job, three kids, limited time, limited strength, unlimited laundry… you know how it goes. For me, spring cleaning stretches across multiple days (weeks?). However long it takes.

I don’t pressure myself because this is one chore I actually enjoy. Not the scrubbing part — don’t get me wrong — but the freshness, the energy, the magic that my space radiates after is SO worth it. And my secret is focusing on one area at a time.

So, as I’ve been going through the process these last few days, I realized something: there are certain spots of the house I always forget to clean during the regular weekly pass. But once I do them during spring cleaning, the whole space feels brand new. Like flipping a switch.

Mama, let’s jump into the 7 most forgotten but game‑changing spots you’ll want to add to your spring‑cleaning list:

1. The Tops of Doors and Door Frames

Tell me why these things collect dust as if they’re auditioning to be part of a haunted house? You don’t see it, you don’t think about it… until you climb on a chair and swipe your cloth across. Instant dust drama. A quick wipe goes a long way — suddenly the whole hallway feels less… stale.

2. The Space Behind (and Under) the Sofa

Ohhh yes. That mysterious kingdom of lost toys, socks, Goldfish crackers, hair ties, mysterious crumbs, and possibly your dignity. We all know it.Pull the sofa out, take a deep breath (you’ll need it), and clear everything out.Once it's clean, the living room feels so airy, as if the house finally exhaled.

3. Light Switches and Door Handles

These high‑traffic surfaces are touched hundreds of times a day — with hands that have held snacks, crayons, phones, sippy cups… and nobody remembers to clean them. But once you do? Your house feels instantly more hygienic and shiny. It’s that small detail that makes a big difference.

4. The Inside of Your Kitchen Drawers

Not the outside… those we all wipe. I’m talking about the inside. Yes, where rogue rice grains, bread crumbs, onion skins, tea stains, and that one measuring spoon you're missing all gather for a secret party. Pull them out, wipe them down, maybe put a fresh liner — BOOM. The kitchen feels like a brand‑new, “I’ve-got-my-life-together” kind of space.

5. Baseboards (Especially Behind Beds and Dressers)

These are sneaky little dust collectors. Baseboards make a HUGE difference, especially the ones you haven’t looked at since your last furniture move… which was probably sometime before the pandemic. A quick swipe with a damp cloth and suddenly the whole bedroom feels refreshed — even without changing the sheets.

6. The Laundry Room Appliances (Inside and Outside)

Our washers and dryers work hard. Yet, do we ever clean them? Rarely. Do yourself a favor this spring:

  • Wipe the outside

  • Clean the detergent drawer

  • Run a washer-cleaning cycle

  • Vacuum behind and under both machines

  • Empty the dryer vent (this one is important!)

The laundry room will instantly feel cleaner… and may even smell less like socks and despair. Maybe.

7. Air Vents, Fans, and Bathroom Exhausts

These are SO easy to forget but they dramatically affect your air quality. Dust loves to hide up there, and once it accumulates, it circulates back into the house like some kind of uninvited guest. Wipe down vents, vacuum exhaust fans, clean ceiling fan blades — and you’ll literally feel the air lighten.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about scrubbing and sorting. It’s about renewal — physical and emotional. It’s about reclaiming our space after the heaviness of winter. It’s about giving ourselves (and our homes) a fresh start.

You don’t need to finish everything in a day. You don’t need perfection. You just need progress — little pockets of freshness added day by day. And trust me, tackling these often‑forgotten areas will make your home feel so refreshed, so clean, and so ready for spring (even if Quebec’s weather disagrees!).

So tell me, fellow mama —which of these spots are you tackling first? And which one have you been avoiding for months?

Let’s motivate each other — spring cleaning season has officially begun! 🌸

Love, Katerina
