A Weekend Escape to Kingston, Ontario: Lakeside Charm, Family Fun & Culinary Surprises

Hello friends!

Last weekend, we decided to take advantage of the (still) warm, golden autumn weather and sneak in a little escape. You know that feeling when the season is shifting, and you just want to breathe in something new before the chill sets in? That was us. We were craving a change of scenery, a chance to recharge, and ideally, somewhere close enough to avoid the dreaded “Are we there yet?” chorus from the back seat.

We debated between the cozy charm of the Québécois countryside and the fairy-tale towns of Ontario nestled around the grand lakes. Our criteria were simple: no more than three hours away by car, one night only, and somewhere that felt like a discovery. My daughter cast the deciding vote—Ontario it was. After a bit of map browsing and travel blog hopping, we landed on Kingston.

To be honest, I hadn’t heard much about Kingston before. But what a gem! I’m now officially a Kingston enthusiast and wholeheartedly recommend it as a weekend getaway, especially for families.

First Impressions: A City by the Water

Kingston is beautifully situated on the northeastern shore of Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes. (Fun fact: While Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes, it’s still massive). The city is also where the Cataraqui River meets the lake, forming part of the historic Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Water is everywhere, and it gives Kingston a breezy, relaxed vibe. There’s something about being near the lake that instantly lifts your spirits. The waterfront is clean, walkable, and dotted with parks, marinas, and scenic spots perfect for a picnic or a sunset stroll.

The 1000 Islands (Actually 1,864!)

One of Kingston’s most famous attractions is the 1000 Islands cruise. Spoiler alert: there are actually 1,864 islands scattered between Kingston and Brockville, many of them tiny and privately owned, with adorable cottages perched on them. The tours typically depart from downtown and offer stunning views, historical commentary, and even castle sightings!

Downtown Delights & Culinary Surprises

Kingston’s downtown is compact, charming, and easy to explore on foot. It’s full of heritage buildings, boutique shops, and—surprisingly—a vibrant food scene. I was genuinely impressed by the variety of international cuisines available.

We had dinner at Olivea, a cozy Italian spot right across from Springer Market Square. Their handmade pasta and warm ambiance made it a hit with both adults and kids. The next day, we ventured into the flavorful world of House of MoMo, which offers a fusion of Nepalese, Indian, Chinese, and Thai dishes. Their fish curry? Absolutely divine. If you’re a curry lover like me, don’t miss it.

I had my eye on Tango Nuevo, a tapas restaurant with rave reviews, but we figured the kids might not appreciate the small plates concept. Next time, though!

Student Energy & Sunday Markets

Kingston is home to Queen’s University, so the city has a youthful, energetic vibe. On Sunday morning, we wandered along the waterfront and stumbled upon a lively international food festival in front of the historic City Hall. The square was buzzing with music, aromas, and families enjoying the sunshine. It felt like the whole town was out celebrating the season.

There’s also a regular farmers’ market at Springer Market Square, where you can find local produce, handmade crafts, and delicious baked goods. It’s a great way to mingle with locals and support small businesses.

Museums & Activities

If you’re into history, Kingston won’t disappoint. It’s often called the “Limestone City” because of its beautiful 19th-century buildings made from local stone. We didn’t have time to visit all the museums, but the Military Communications and Electronics Museum and the Penitentiary Museum are popular picks. For kids, the PumpHouse Steam Museum offers interactive exhibits and a peek into Kingston’s industrial past.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Kingston ranges from budget-friendly motels to upscale hotels. We chose a hotel right by the waterfront in the heart of downtown, which turned out to be the perfect decision. Everything was within walking distance, and we didn’t have to worry about parking—which, trust me, can be tricky in the city center.

A Final Stop: Lake Ontario Park

On our way back home, we made a spontaneous stop at Lake Ontario Park, just a short drive from downtown Kingston. It’s one of the largest parks in the area and a fantastic spot for families. The kids ran wild at the playground while we sat by the water, soaking in the

peaceful lake views. It almost felt like we were by the sea—the lake is that vast.

Refreshed & Recharged

We came back home feeling refreshed, recharged, and grateful for the little adventures that make life sweet. Kingston surprised us in the best way possible—with its lakeside charm, vibrant culture, and welcoming atmosphere. It’s the kind of place that feels both historic and youthful, laid-back yet full of life.

If you’re looking for a quick family escape that combines nature, culture, and great food, Kingston should be on your radar. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or just a mom looking for a fun weekend with the kids, this little city has something for everyone!

Love, Katerina
