How should you get dressed when working from home?

Hey there my friends!

One of the (few) positive changes the quarantines of recent years brought into our lives (yes, I try to see the glass half full!) was the establishment of remote and hybrid job models. I consider myself extremely lucky to have been working fully remotely for the past 4–5 years. Honestly, I can only look back in horror at all the precious time I used to waste commuting—until March 2020, when everything shut down due to Covid and the world hit the reset button.

But along with remote work came something unexpected: the biggest fashion revolution of the 21st century—the rise of the “Zoom mullet”: business on top, pajamas on the bottom.

Working from home has completely rewritten the rules of office attire. But just because your commute is now 12 steps to the kitchen doesn’t mean your wardrobe has to be a total free-for-all. So, how should you get dressed when working from home? Let’s explore your options!

The Pajama Professional is the undisputed champion of comfort. Dressed in last night’s sleepwear and clutching a coffee mug the size of a small planet, this remote worker radiates cozy confidence. The vibe? “I’m here, I’m comfy, and I might nap between meetings.” The pros are obvious: maximum comfort and zero laundry stress. But beware the cons—surprise video calls can be a real hazard, and there’s a high chance you’ll forget what day it is. This look is best reserved for Mondays, Tuesdays… okay, let’s be honest—most days.

The Zoom Illusionist has mastered the art of looking polished—at least from the waist up. Sporting a crisp blazer or blouse on top and gym shorts or pajama pants below, this remote worker exudes the vibe: “I’m totally professional—just don’t ask me to stand up.” It’s a clever combo that looks great on camera and keeps you cool, both literally and figuratively. But beware: one accidental stretch or unexpected doorbell dash, and your secret’s out. This look is ideal for important meetings where only your upper half needs to shine.

The Athleisure Aficionado is all about blending comfort with just enough style to look like you might work out later (even if you absolutely won’t). Dressed in coordinated leggings and a hoodie or a sleek jogger set, this remote worker gives off the vibe: “I’m productive, flexible, and ready to chase a toddler or a deadline.” The pros? You’ll feel stylish and stretchy all day long, and you’re always prepared for a spontaneous walk or a quick yoga session. The only downside is the occasional guilt trip when your outfit is more active than you are. This look is perfect for days when you want to feel put-together without putting in too much effort.

The “I Still Got It” Ensemble is for those who refuse to let remote work dull their shine. Dressed in full office attire—including shoes, yes, even the shoes—this remote warrior channels the vibe: “I dress for the job I want, even if that job is currently happening at my dining room table.” The pros? You’ll feel sharp, confident, and ready to conquer your to-do list. It’s a mental boost that can turn a sluggish day into a productive one. The cons? It might be a tad overkill for answering emails while your cat walks across your keyboard. This look is best saved for big presentation days or when you need to remind yourself (and maybe your coworkers) that you’ve still got it.

The Chaos Coordinator (aka Parent Mode) is the ultimate multitasker’s uniform. This look is defined not by fashion trends, but by whatever is clean, comfortable, and allows for maximum mobility—because when you’re juggling Zoom calls, snack requests, and spontaneous crayon-on-the-wall incidents, practicality wins. The vibe is pure survival: “I’ve packed lunches, mediated sibling disputes, and still made it to the 9 AM call.” The pros? It’s real, it’s functional, and it gets the job done. The cons? You may discover mystery smudges and mismatched socks, but hey—at least you showed up. This look is perfect for every day that ends in “Y.”

The beauty of working from home? You get to set your own dress code. Whether you're wrapped in a robe or suited up like you're heading to the boardroom, the goal is the same: feel good, stay focused, and—if possible—remember to change out of your pajamas before 5 PM.

So, how do you dress when working from home? Are you a Pajama Professional, a Chaos Coordinator, or something entirely your own?

As for me, I never wear pajamas or shoes—so I land somewhere in between, depending on the day and my mood.

Now it’s your turn: share your WFH fashion wins (and fails). We promise not to judge your bunny slippers!

Love, Katerina
